I was standing on the corner of a busy Utrecht fietsstraat (bicycle priority street) when this mom with two small kids in a box bike, a baby strapped to her chest, and her two large dogs rolled past me. One of the women in my painting circle laughingly call this een levenscircus (a circus of life).
The circus of life is one of the things I love most about living in the bicycle city of Utrecht. I get a front row seat to human life on the move: people with their stories and emotions, at all stages of life, passing me by in the open air. We are all part of street life when we go by bike. My paintings try to show that life, as well as hint at backstories and questions.
What's this mom pointing out to her two young children? Why is one dog inside the bike box while another runs alongside? How awesome is it that she manages the competing demands of all these dogs and little ones while calmly biking through town?
